Do you need community?

Feb 11, 2026

"Do I really need a community?"

The short answer, of course, is No...

In fact, there is something truly exciting (and terrifying!) about going it alone. I've experienced that:

  • Finally having my own law firm
  • Saying yes to be a speaker at an event where I was the only one "on stage"
  • Starting my own consulting and coaching company

Before taking the leap, I liked the safety of things that ultimately belonged to someone else. Being the leader, the owner, the name on the door, the only voice is both scary and exhilarating.

And I'm not going to lie—there's power in that independence.

But if you asked me my favorite thing about staying all those years (whether it was at the big law firm or the coaching company), I will tell you that it was the people, the camaraderie, and learning and growing with others that I loved the most.

Because when you work alone:

  • You can't always see your own blind spots
  • You can think your struggles are unique (and they're typically not)
  • You reinvent wheels that have already been perfected
  • You question whether you're doing it "right" with no one to confirm or challenge you

So, soon after going out on my own as a consultant and coach, I reconnected with some of my trusted old colleagues to recreate that "virtual water cooler" vibe that we had before: talking about new things we were learning, checking in on how we were each doing, sharing ideas and advice on what was working and what was hard.

I was reminded why my favorite part of working at bigger companies was the community. Because with a supportive network, heavy things got lighter. And honestly it was FUN!

Community isn't just nice to have.

It can be the difference between:

  • Surviving and thriving
  • Stagnating and evolving
  • Guessing and knowing

HOW FAR CAN YOU GO?

We believe that you can only take your clients as far as you've gone yourself.

If you're not challenging your own beliefs, getting feedback, learning from others' experiences, and pushing your own edges—then there's a chance your clients won't either.

Your growth IS their growth.

And, in our experience, growth happens fastest in community.

So, do you really need a community?

No. You don't need it.

You can build a successful practice alone. You can help people. You can make a difference.

You can do it alone.

But you'll learn slower, plateau faster, and miss opportunities you didn't know existed.

Not because you're not capable.

But because you're human. And humans weren't designed to figure everything out in a vacuum.

THE BIRTH OF SEAR

You probably guessed it:

When Suzee and I started working together (of course she was in my unofficial cohort before we made it official!), we realized that we were better coaches because of our conversations.

Not because we agreed on everything (we don't). But because we challenged each other, tried things and reported back, admitted when we were stuck, celebrated when we figured something out.

And we kept coming back to the thought: What if more people had this?

What if there was a place where helping professionals came together to:

  • Try tools in real-time
  • Share what's working (and what's not)
  • Workshop actual client situations
  • Learn from each other's experiences
  • Grow together

That's why we created SEAR.

We've spent years doing deep work on ourselves, not just learning coaching techniques, but facing our own patterns, testing tools, and doing the messy work of growth.

We realized that helping professionals don't all have the access to a community. They're doing their growth work in isolation. And they're navigating real client situations without feedback or support from peers who get it. Maybe this is you?

So here's the better question:

Do you want to do this alone?

Or do you want to:

  • Learn faster
  • Feel less isolated
  • Have a sounding board
  • Celebrate with people who get it
  • Become the coach your clients actually need

Because going it alone is possible.

But going together is transformational.

If you or someone you know would benefit from a supportive community, join us at SEAR - no matter where you are in your journey!
